When Covid-19 first made its way to Australia, my family and I were prepared. We increased our doses of Vitamin A, C and D, made sure we had early nights, ate well, took our hand sanitisers with us everywhere, drank our Broc Shots daily and talked to each other regularly about our emotional wellbeing to make sure the isolation wasn't getting to us. We ordered weights and skipping ropes online and created circuits we could do together in the garden.
I was inundated with health questions from customers and website orders came flooding in. I felt very guilty. I struggled with the thought that the business was doing well from people's fear of Covid, and that made me uncomfortable. A friend pointed out that doctors get rich from people being sick. She reminded me that the reason why I started the business was to bring natural health to as many people as possible and that's exactly what I was doing. And that's exactly what I want to continue to do. I love this business, I love the products and my entire family use everything on the website. It makes me happy when my 16-year old son helps himself to the box of oils on the kitchen work top - he knows exactly what to use. Below I've described some of our favourites, they're a great mix of products that can have certainly helped us through this isolation period. We don't sell them all, but what you can't get from our website, such as Olive Leaf Extract or Epsom Salts, are easily available from the chemist or health food shop.
By now, we all know what COVID-19 is, what steps to take to prevent exposure to it, such as frequently washing your hands and wearing face masks etc. and what initial steps you can take if you think you might be showing initial symptoms, such as drinking hot lemon water every 20 minutes to flush it into your stomach.
However, there are a variety of other natural measures you can take to ensure you keep your home, your family and your body healthy and happy and to reduce your risk both in the short and long term.
Keeping the air clean and germ-free is a number one priority – whether you’re at home or work. Aromatherapy diffusers are a simple and effective way of killing germs and purifying the air and we have one going in the lounge and one going in the kitchen. A diffuser infuses the particles of water with essential oils using an ultrasonic vibration, and disperses the micro particles through the air in a fine mist. So, by using a diffuser, you not only make your home smell lovely, but are clearing and purifying the air at the same time. So, how do the essential oils do this?
Most essential oils have anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties but the essential oils of Bergamot, Eucalyptus, Cinnamon, Rosemary and Oregano seem to come out tops. In fact, there has been extensive biomedical research conducted on the effectiveness of essential oils, with impressive results.
A research article published in 2017 for the National Center for Biotechnology Information said that the blend of Cinnamon, Rosemary and Eucalyptus essential oils: “may be interesting to treat influenza and postinfluenza bacterial pneumonia infections. These blends could be very useful in clinical practice to combat common infections including those caused by microorganisms resistant to antimicrobial drugs.”
So, it’s a good idea to keep the diffuser going every day, particularly if you have people coming in and out of your home. If you’re still going to work, you can take a travel or car diffuser with you to purify the air around you. And don’t forget your organic hand sanitiser, particularly if you’re working with the general public. Choose a hand sanitiser which is ideally organic and at least 70% ethanol for its viral-killing ability.
Immune System Boost
On Guard is doTERRA’s most popular way of boosting your immune system, with its special proprietary blend of Clove, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus, Rosemary and Wild Orange essential oils. It’s a great essential oil to diffuse if you can get your hands on it. You can also take it with you in a roll-on bottle, diluted with coconut carrier oil; or take a few drops internally in a veggie capsule. If you’re finding it difficult to get hold of On Guard products at the moment – we’ve found the recipe! So, you can blend your own in the following amounts:
There are many other ways of improving your immune system through your diet to build your resistance to seasonal and viral threats. If you google the benefits of goji or acai berries or wheatgrass and spirulina, they have many things in common – they all have antioxidative benefits; claim to reduce the threat of cancer; offer digestive and anti-cholesterol benefits and, importantly, boost your immune system. The antioxidants counter the effect of free radicals, which not only age the body, but cause an inflammatory response and increase the risk of cancer and heart disease. Chronic inflammation in the body is one of the major causes of long-term critical disease.
Broc Shots offer the same potent antioxidant and immune boosting benefits and taking a Broc Shot a day is a great way of using Nature’s Defence to bolster your own, providing profound health benefits. Broc Shots are the best quality, most advanced and effective Sulphoraphane product available on the market. Sulforaphane has cytoprotective benefits, i.e. an ability to bolster the body’s natural defences against oxidative stress, inflammation and DNA damage.
Made from organic, dried and powdered broccoli, daikon and kale sprouts, flavoured with hibiscus and lime, the new formula is considerably more potent and supportive of your body’s health. Simply fill the little bottle with water, bang the lid to release the powder, shake and drink.
Boosting your immune system by taking additional daily supplements is also vitally important. American scientist Dr Shiva suggests that Vitamin C, A and D are particularly effective at strengthening your body’s viral resistance, but you should see your healthcare practitioner to find out by how much you should increase your dose.
Regularly taking immune-boosting supplements is the best form of prevention. Other options include taking olive leaf extract which is an amazing immune support and best taken in liquid form if you can. I actually like the sweet taste, but it makes my children gag!
Tumeric-based products and supplements are another extremely effective way of supporting your digestive system and gut health in order to strengthen your immune system. Products like tumeric chai tea or capsules not only regulate your digestion but also provide strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits. This particular brand is approved by the TGA for its medicinal benefits, which is why I like it so much. Tastes delicious too!
If you suffer from chronic stress or anxiety, you may welcome a bit of additional natural support at this time. Our Chinese herbal Sunny Pills provide a great emotional and internal support, ensuring optimum organ function, and offering improved digestive and energy boosting capabilities. Sunny Pills also improve your sleep and overall sense of wellbeing.
Stress is a major contributor to inflammation in the body and impact upon your immune system, so avoiding stress at all costs is important. However, in times of COVID-19, we’re all currently living under more stress than usual, not only in isolation but also with increased financial pressure for many.
Which is why self-care should be a top priority at this time, by taking Epsom Salt baths, getting plenty of sleep, regular exercise, eating lots of green veggies etc. Keep an eye on your Vitamin B12 levels and you might want to seek advice about increasing your dose of fish oils, as both are important nervous system supports. During periods of extreme stress, as many as 4 – 6 capsules of fish oil can be recommended.
dōTERRA also offers a number of blends for emotional support – Elevation, Cheer, Motivation are all essential oil blends to keep the positivity flowing, while Balance will help you do just that. If you’ve recently lost a loved one, then the Console essential oil blend orHelichrysum may be able to provide you with some additional support when you need it the most.
These are just some of the precautions you can take during the pandemic and the quickest ways of boosting your immune system. Here's wishing you and your families keep happy and keep safe.
